A Tribute

When I stay at home, it is easy to forget how large our part of the planet which we call the United States really is. The faster one travels, the shorter . . .
the distance seems. Transportation makes it so much more accessible which is why most of our families live such imposing distances apart. For my trip, 3,906 miles morphed desert into high desert, rolling plains, mid-western farms, landscapes of trees and dense vegetation, huge metropolitan areas, horses and cattle on rolling hills, and back into the wide-open landscape and grand sunsets of the west. The oncoming winter changes chased but never caught up with me. I am now at home, at journey's end.

I mentioned in an earlier post that the trip took on a general theme of 'parting is such sweet sorrow' while visiting my family and then having to leave to go on. I was able to visit family who were not able to make it to Charley's service as well as those who did. Friendships and bonds only grew stronger by sharing a few more moments together. Symbolically, that theme is my life right now. I've had to part with the one person with whom I've shared breath, sweat, laughter, love, and tears. Crisscrossing roads we wandered upon before just brings out the sweet and is followed with the sorrow. Of course, this road is not the one I've planned but find myself on regardless.

In the end, the trip is a tribute, a tribute to Charley. He viewed and treated me as an equal, and because he did so, he made this trip possible. He gave me the strength and skills during our relationship to do this now. My travels, long hours on the road, sharing my ability to see this world in a sheltered vehicle pulling a little rolling home away from home with my dogs, was therapeutic, to say the least. Being able to touch family, to touch love and warmth creates new goals. Thanksgiving is here. I thank my love for sharing his life with me. I thank my friends for their love, support and advice. I thank the people who shared the road with me. And, again, I thank my love for sharing his life with me. Continuing to travel is a promise we made to each other, a promise I made to him. My muscled Odin obeyed me as master as he remained my sentry with Cassie as his assistant. Being able to manage my fiberglass treasure on wheels makes my promise that more attainable, a promise that I am doing my best with all my strength to keep. Here's to Charley!

  1. Beautiful post, Kamala - "Crisscrossing roads we wandered upon before just brings out the sweet and is followed with the sorrow. Of course, this road is not one I’ve planned but find myself on regardless." - wisdom you are living, I am taking notes. In the bigger picture, sweet and sorrow are essential companions. Here's to savoring - in the moment and in memory. I find memories often dominate the current moment ... popping up for further savor.
    Hugs and Happy Thanksgiving.
